Fretting and Fleeting

Pretty little blue bird

In a little branch,

Has life got you down?

Pretty little blue bird,

Don’t fret or flare,

God will keep you

Safe and sound.

I wrote this poem on the back of this painting, and truly, I don’t remember why I did. What issue I was fretting over or what stressor I was enduring.

Isn’t it odd how the circumstances that inspired this piece are forgotten to me?

Isn’t it odd how we fret and flare and fear… when in all likelihood, the source of our terror will fade away? Week by week, year by year, its potency will diminish until – like me, right now – we won’t even be able to recall the instance that had us panicking.

And yet, in the moment, it’s so terrifying, overwhelming, and painful, isn’t it? Feels inescapable, right?

Friends, I don’t know what you’re going through, but God does. And somehow, someway, He can make your unsurpassable, inescapable, larger-than-life trials…

Fade away.

Something that’s always fascinated me is the finite reality of my art. As the years have gone by, I’ve seen colors fade, sheen dulled, and edges worn. But for the moment, I want to focus on those once-vibrant hues that get sun-bleached from sitting right by my window:

This may seem odd, but I pray that we become like those sun-bleached paintings of mine, like this blue bird will eventually be. Not because our vibrant colors are bad, but because the trials that define us now will not withstand the brilliant rays of the Son.

(See what I did there? Sun and Son?)

As finite as this painting is, our troubles are more fleeting. Or rather, they can be fleeting…

If you plant yourself before the Son, face Him, and bask in the healing Light, Life, and Love that only He can provide.

After all, our God will surely keep us safe and sound (Ps 121).
